The Rise of Reposado

The surge of blanco tequila after the Patron vs. Siete Leguas scandal, proved that the U.S. market had a serious deficit to be filled. It turns out, tequila was not only desired by Americans, but craved. This wild surge lead to many more tequila makers trying to inch their way into the market. (Don't get me started on celebrity tequilas).

We then fast forward to the dominance of mezcal. Smoky piña hearts turned into the goddess elixir that it is. Mezcal found its way into classics with ease. The Last Word with mezcal. Naked & Famous with mezcal. The elusive Old Fashioned, with you guessed it. Mezcal.

Mezcal isn't fading anytime soon, but it does have a touch of competition on the horizon. Reposado is flying off liquor store shelves and back bars in such a fashion, that makers are having trouble keeping up with demand. Fortaleza, 86'd until who knows when. Tequila Ocho, gone with little hope in sight. The newest trend of reposado has resonated from finance bros, all the way to the newly of age drinker. Reposado on the rocks with and orange is now the norm. Here are my top 3 to try.

Mijenta Reposado: Woman owned, no additives.

Siete Leguas Reposado: Double distilled in copper alambics, no additives.

Codigo Reposado: No additives, rested in french white oak cabernet barrels.

Cheers!
